General Speaking Tips
Whether you are delivering a speech or introducing another speaker, it’s easy to be intimidated. We’ve gathered a few tips and tricks to make it a little easier for you to get the job done.
Practice practice practice.
If you practice early and often, you’ll be much more comfortable. Go through your speech twice a day, and have a friend, spouse or family dog as your audience.
Know what you’re going to say.
If you have a something written out, either as an outline or a word-for-word speech, you need to have something definite to tell your audience. The more you have prepared in advance, the more you can focus and practice on wording, inflection, tone of voice, and body language.
Don’t worry. Relax.
Unless you are pleading the case of a defendant who may be sentenced the death penalty, the effects of your speech probably won’t matter too much in the grand scheme of things. People forget speeches pretty quickly. If there is something at stake such as your promotion, whether a city council will accept your proposal to grant or deny or permit, or something more direct to your needs, then try to convince yourself that it’s not the end of the world. Those with nothing to lose, will win more easily.
